Is Crystal worth the money? An Honest Review of the Ultra-Luxury Cruise Line

Is Crystal worth the money? An Honest Review of the Ultra-Luxury Cruise Line

My wife and I have recently returned from an eight-night sailing with Crystal. I wanted to share my honest thoughts on the ultra-luxury voyage, and address the all-important questions - is Crystal really worth the money and would we sail with them again? Well, we can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable cruises we have been on for some time. There’s always a moment of nervousness before boarding a ship... Will it live up to expectations? As it turned out, we needn’t have worried - it absolutely did.                                    Crystal has long been known for operating two of the most refined ships at sea, often described as 'ultra-luxury'. Only a limited selected of ships qualify for that category, and Crystal has two of them. From the moment we stepped aboard, we knew the ship would suit us. Helped by the complimentary glass of champagne on arrival! It’s a combination of 'old world charm' meets understated elegance.  As you move around the ship, the ambience feels polished and calm, more like a private club at sea. It’s not fussy or ostentatious, just thoughtfully done. Unlike many modern cruise ships that can resemble shopping malls, or Las Vegas at Sea,  Crystal has held onto the timeless spirit of ocean travel, when space and service took precedence over spectacle. Part of Crystal’s appeal lies in what it doesn’t do. The ships aren’t filled with gimmicks or noisy distractions, and that restraint works in their favour. Though the vessels are older, they retain a sense of space and comfort that makes the experience relaxing, rather than hectic.                            Service is where Crystal truly stands out. The warmth of the Staff stood out from day one, and continued throughout the voyage. Many have been with the company for years, and that familiarity shows. They’re attentive without being intrusive, and seem genuinely proud of the product they deliver. Chatting with fellow guests, we quickly realised how strong Crystal’s following is. The two ships, Serenity and Symphony, have one of the highest repeat guest rates in the industry - around 94 per cent, according to reports. That level of loyalty is rare, and it helps explain the many awards Crystal has collected over the years, including the 'Best Cruiseline' award by Travel & Leisure World, for twenty consecutive years. Crystal operates on a fully all-inclusive basis, meaning drinks (both alcoholic and non), Wi-Fi, speciality dining (at least once per venue), gratuities and butler service in all suites are covered in the fare. A key distinction is that every section of the ship is open to everyone. There’s no 'ship within a ship' concept, or tiered access with restricted areas. This makes such a difference and creates a notably relaxed and enjoyable social atmosphere. For us, several aspects made Crystal feel genuinely special. The first is the dining. We can say, hand on heart, that it is amongst the best cuisine we have had at sea. The main restaurant, Waterside, delivers consistently excellent meals. You could dine there every night and still be delighted. Its standard is better than the many speciality restaurants on other lines. But it would be a mistake not to try the speciality options, and there are three of them.                             The first, and most famous, is Umi Uma by Nobu. It is a real coup for Crystal to get Nobu on their ships. The fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavours is exquisite, with every dish beautifully presented. Next is the Italian venue, Osteria d’Ovidio. The menu blends traditional Italian favourites with dishes from Venice. It was one of the most enjoyable meals we have had anywhere, land or sea. The final speciality venue is Beef Bar, a Monaco-based concept focusing on fine cuts of meat and seafood. It was equally impressive. In short, Crystal is a cruise line for foodies. The variety and quality are excellent. Our Cabin was one of the newly expanded ‘Sapphire Suites’, created by combining two former cabins into one open-plan space. Decorated in soft blues with elegant lighting, it featured one of the most spacious bathrooms we have seen on a ship.  The itinerary was an eight-night voyage from Barcelona to Lisbon, visiting a string of beautiful European ports, including Ibiza, Cartagena, Malaga and the mystical Casablanca in Morocco. The route offered the perfect blend of Mediterranean charm and North African adventure, and we would highly recommend it.                             Reflecting on our time aboard, would we recommend Crystal? Wholeheartedly and without hesitation. From the moment you step on board, the all-inclusive concept makes the experience feel indulgent. Yes, Crystal is a higher price point than other luxury lines, but what you receive in return is exemplary. That is precisely what ultra-luxury cruising is meant to provide. Both ships were completely refurbished in 2023, and they feel beautifully maintained, polished, and cared for. Two brand-new vessels are also  planned, with the first expected to debut in 2028. Are Crystal the only ultra-luxury cruise line? No, there are others - Silversea, Regent and Seabourn to name but a few, but our latest trip with Crystal exceeded expectations. It is an indulgence, yes, but also a joy. For anyone seeking an exclusive, small-ship experience with just 650 to 780 passengers, Crystal should be at or near the top of your shortlist. ————————————————————————————————————————Bill is the creator behind Ritzy Travel Guide, a YouTube channel and travel platform. Our experience on board Crystal Serenity

Our experience on board Crystal Serenity

Our experience on board Crystal Serenity I recently had the pleasure of embarking upon a three-night voyage from Barcelona to Sète on board Crystal Serenity. I had the most incredible time and was eager to share my experience on what you can expect on board this stunning ship, from service and suites to dining and entertainment.  Q: What was your boarding experience like on Crystal Serenity?  A: Boarding Crystal Serenity was incredibly smooth, and the crew were so friendly from the moment we stepped on board. Q: What were your first impressions of Crystal Serenity?  A: Crystal Serenity is stunning; she’s much larger than many other ultra-luxury ships, and offers an abundance of open space to relax in. The decor exudes elegance and class throughout the ship; the public spaces have been re-designed, removing the dark wood so they’re much lighter, particularly the atrium area, which is just breathtaking. Q: What’s the accommodation like on Crystal Serenity?  A: We stayed in one of Crystal’s newly renovated Sapphire Veranda Suites, which was impressively spacious. As you walk in, the suite has a beautiful walk-in wardrobe to the side, with a stunning living area, separated from the bedroom which I loved. You can access the bathroom from both the living room and the bedroom, which was handy! The Veranda runs the full length of the suite, with sliding doors from both the living area and the bedroom.  Q: Is there butler service on Crystal Serenity?   Yes, you enjoy butler service with every suite on Crystal Cruises. I had a fabulous butler called Denis who was fantastic. He checked on my special requests and explained the complimentary laundry, including pressing and dry cleaning (two-day service).  You’re never short of refreshments on a Crystal cruise. He delivered daily canapés and ensured the champagne was always re-stocked and chilled.  The mini bar will also be stocked/re-stocked to your preference throughout your cruise. Q: What’s the entertainment like on Crystal Serenity?  A: The evening entertainment was superb - we had so much fun. I don’t tend to be one for shows usually, but they were excellent!  A real benefit of Crystal having larger ships is the wider choice of entertainment. I personally think they have the best entertainment out of all the ultra-luxury cruise lines. You still have the Broadway productions in the Galaxy Lounge but also a wide variety of lounges and alternative venues, like the onboard nightclub with music, dancing and karaoke.  Q: What was your favourite activity or entertainment on board Crystal Serenity?  A: One of my favourite venues was the Avenue Saloon, Crystal’s signature piano bar. I had seen the pianist before on another cruise line and he is very talented. He takes requests, has everyone singing along whilst singing and playing the guitar, and even does the odd magic trick in between sets - it was a great atmosphere. Q: What is the food like on Crystal Serenity?  A: The food onboard was exceptional! It is the best food I’ve ever had on a cruise. The range is fantastic, with eight restaurants, plus Scoops Gelato Bar and 24-hour in-suite dining. There are so many dining options when you sail with Crystal, but Umi Uma (the only Nobu at sea) is an absolute must-visit.  The food across all the restaurants was phenomenal. We dined at Osterio D’Ovidio, serving Italian cuisine, and enjoyed the most incredible lamb, and during the day, we went to Waterside for breakfast and lunch. Q: Which are the best restaurants and dishes to try on Crystal Serenity?  A: Beef bar is a triumph – it mimics a street food experience that’s completely unique, so this was definitely my favourite. There was so much choice, so the waiter brought us an array of recommended small plates from the menu, including wagyu bao buns (my favourite), tacos, salmon and tuna; it was delightful! Q: What was the service like on board Crystal Serenity?  A: The service was the best I have ever experienced on a luxury ship. The staff were incredibly friendly, warm and genuinely couldn’t do enough for you – I was truly impressed! Q: How was your overall experience on board Crystal Serenity?  A: I honestly had a fantastic time on board. I could not fault any aspect of the cruise - the suite was stunning; the ship is beautiful and the perfect size. The quality of the wines and premium drinks was impressive, and the food was just phenomenal – the best I have ever had. The staff are wonderful, and the entertainment was far better than I’d expected! I cannot recommend this ship or the cruise line enough. Three nights just wasn’t long enough! I will definitely be travelling with Crystal again. Q: What is your top tip for travelling with Crystal Cruises?  A: I would advise to go with a newly refurbished suite. The classic design is beautiful, but the ones that have been refurbished in 2023 are just stunning and really stand out from the rest. I’d also highly recommend experiencing as much of the entertainment as possible, as it is the best I’ve ever seen at sea!

My cruise around Canada with Azamara: Would I recommend it?

My cruise around Canada with Azamara: Would I recommend it?

I recently sailed around Canada on board Azamara Quest on their Autumn Colours Voyage, cruising from Montréal along the Saint Lawrence River and down the East Coast of North America to New York. What’s the best luxury cruise line to sail around Canada with? If you’re considering a Canada and New England cruise, I highly recommend travelling in the autumn, when the landscape transforms into a spectacular backdrop of red and golden leaves. Azamara’s small-ship luxury allows you to visit smaller, lesser-known ports and enjoy a truly authentic Canadian experience. The voyage was the perfect combination of scenic beauty, cultural discovery and small-ship comfort. Every port offered something unique, from charming coastal towns, busier waterfront cities and lots of dramatic autumn landscapes. With a fleet of four smaller ships, Azamara’s ships are able to dock in ports that larger vessels can’t reach, offering carefully crafted itineraries that allow guests to truly immerse themselves in each destination and experience the very best of every region and its culture.                             My first impressions on board Azamara Quest Azamara seamlessly fuses the intimate, small-ship atmosphere with the charm and warmth of a boutique hotel at sea. Life on board Azamara Quest is relaxed, yet elegant, and the friendly crew create such a welcoming environment that it immediately feels like home from the moment you step on board. What’s the dining like on board Azamara Quest? The dining on board is a genuine highlight, with a wide range of dietary needs thoughtfully catered for. For an extra fee, we dined at Prime C Steakhouse, a speciality restaurant where impeccable service and beautifully presented dishes made the evening feel truly memorable. What’s the accommodation and public spaces like on Azamara Quest? Our inside cabin was surprisingly spacious, comfortable and blissfully quiet. Across the ship, the public areas felt cosy and inviting, with plenty of room to unwind and tasteful décor adding to the sense of understated luxury.                             My highlights from my Canada cruise with Azamara Over twelve memorable nights, our voyage took us to a captivating collection of ports. Quebec City, Saguenay, Baie Comeau, Havre Saint Pierre, Halifax, Lunenburg, Saint John, Portland, Boston, and Martha’s Vineyard. It concluded with a spectacular arrival into Manhattan, New York. My highlights included the beautiful Quebec City, a charming blend of French heritage and contemporary Canadian culture. Its cobblestone streets, elegant architecture and lively cafés made it one of the most captivating ports of the voyage. Other memorable highlights included a visit to Lunenburg, a picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nova Scotia. This colourful harbour town, with its brightly painted wooden buildings and deep-rooted seafaring heritage, felt like stepping back in time. Only a handful of cruise ships visit each season, which made our call here feel even more special. Lunenburg is famously home to the Bluenose, the iconic racing schooner featured on the Canadian dime, and its working waterfront still reflects that proud shipbuilding legacy. I loved wandering along the harbour, admiring the boats and soaking up the town’s rich maritime history.                             A final unforgettable moment was our transit through the Cape Cod Canal. Although we passed through in the middle of the night, I’m so glad I got up to witness it. The calm stillness of the water, the soft glow of the lights along the shore, and the quiet hum of the ship made it a peaceful and memorable experience, one of those special moments that remind you why it’s worth getting up early at sea. What were the AzAmazing Evenings like on board Azamara? When in Quebec, we experienced one of Azamara’s signature AzAmazing Evenings. These are complimentary events designed to give guests a deeper connection to the destination through local culture and entertainment. Our AzAmazing Evening took place inside the impressive Quebec Armoury, where world-renowned pianist and composer Steve Barakatt gave a mesmerising solo performance. His music filled the grand space, perfectly capturing the spirit and elegance of Quebec, an unforgettable highlight of the cruise. Overall, I would definitely travel with Azamara and do a Canada and New England itinerary again. I wholeheartedly recommend the voyage to anyone seeking an elegant yet relaxed way to explore this stunning part of the world, especially during the autumn. If you’d like to explore itineraries around Canada and New England, or are interested in sailing with Azamara, contact our luxury cruise concierge and they can talk you through all your options to create the perfect holiday for you.

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn Autumn is upon us, and as the air grows crisp and the landscapes begin to evolve, there’s no need to halt your travels. In fact, there are plenty of incredible locations you can enjoy across the globe with a luxury cruise, some even more beautiful for visiting them in these colder months. Vicky Chapman reviews some destination highlights to consider as we welcome a new season. 1. Canada and New England Famed for its vibrant foliage, this beloved area is simply stunning during the Autumn season. With foggy mornings and cooler temperatures, it’s the perfect hiking weather, where you can marvel at the sea of red, orange and golden leaves flooding acres of land. If you’d like to extend your journey pre- or post-cruise, it’s highly recommended to drive one of the region’s iconic routes, like the Kancamagus Highway, Route 100 and Mohawk Trail. Embrace the festive spirit with apple picking, harvest festivals and pumpkin patches. Explore historic sites and discover the many restored 18th and 19th Century buildings. 2. Japan No autumnal destination inspiration would be complete without a mention of Japan. Whilst renowned for its infamous cherry blossom season, the destination is nothing short of breathtaking during the cooler season, boasting an array of foliage, from fiery reds and golden ginkgo to vivid maple leaves across temples, gardens and mountains. The country is home to an endless number of beautiful temples, from Kyoto to Nara and Mount Takao, which glow amongst the seasonal colours. The pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds make it a far more suitable time for sightseeing, hiking and exploring many of Japan’s spectacular cities like Osaka and Tokyo. You can also enjoy the outdoor hot springs whilst surrounded by the colourful scenery in Hakone, Kusatsu or the Japanese Alps. 3. Alaska A destination that is a common highlight of any frequent cruiser, Alaska is an astonishing part of the world, offering unrivalled views of its towering mountain ranges, pristine waters and fascinating wildlife. Aside from the alpine tundra and boreal forests exploding in deep reds, golds and oranges, the autumnal months are also a particularly active time for resident wildlife. Witness bears and moose in their natural habitats and enjoy an unforgettable afternoon of whale-watching, so you can see these incredible creatures up close. Autumn also means clear, darker nights, which offers explorers a prime opportunity to witness the northern lights while they’re cruising. 4. Mediterranean While beautiful, the Mediterranean summer often involves rocketing temperatures and intensive crowds. Sailing along this part of the world during the autumn allows you to enjoy the iconic landmarks and sites in comfortable weather without the business. Enjoy less queueing and more exploring, whether you’re sailing around the west from Barcelona or Lisbon, or around the east from Athens or Rome (Civitavecchia). The autumnal season is also the perfect time for river cruising, where you’ll still enjoy lots of sunlight but a more serene, peaceful voyage. Explore the heartland of Europe, from the Rhine or the Seine in France or meandering through Vienna and Budapest down the Danube. If you’re interested in booking a last-minute cruise for this Autumn, or perhaps booking ahead, call our luxury cruise concierge today and let us secure your next dream cruise!
