The Douro rises in Spain and flows west through Castile and León into northern Portugal, where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Porto. It is known for its Port wine, scenic landscape, and cultural heritage, and has several tributaries and dams along its course. Douro has been claimed to originate form the word ‘d’ouro’, translating to ‘gold’ in Portugese, referring to the golden hues of it water.
