Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Island skyline, with its ever-growing number of skyscrapers, speaks to ambition and money. Paris, London, even New York were centuries in the making, while Hong Kong's towers, bright lights, and glitzy shopping emporia weren't yet part of the urban scene when many of the... Read More

My Crystal Serenity Experience: A Mediterranean Journey

My Crystal Serenity Experience: A Mediterranean Journey

My Crystal Serenity Experience: A Mediterranean Journey  There’s something particularly exciting about stepping aboard a ship for the first time and discovering what it has to offer, and my recent sailing on board Crystal Serenity certainly lived up to expectations. Sailing through the Mediterranean from Málaga to Barcelona, with stops in Cartagena, Alicante and Castellón, gave me the perfect opportunity to experience Crystal first-hand and see what makes this luxury cruise line so popular.  From the moment I stepped on board, it was clear that attention to detail is at the heart of the Crystal experience. From the spacious accommodation and exceptional dining to the genuinely warm service throughout the ship, there was plenty to impress. Here’s everything I took away from my time on board Crystal Serenity.  Discover Crystal Serenity Deals First Impressions of Crystal Serenity  We joined Crystal Serenity in Málaga. We entered the ship on Deck 6 before making our way down to the atrium and Reception. It happened to be White Night on the evening we embarked, so the main atrium had been beautifully decorated in white, creating a fantastic first impression and setting the tone for the evening.  Inside, Crystal Serenity has a more traditional luxury feel, with dark woods featuring heavily throughout the interiors. However, the ship is due to undergo a significant refurbishment in October 2026, which will see the atrium, staterooms and suites refreshed with a much lighter and brighter aesthetic. Having experienced the ship as it is now, I’m particularly excited to see how these changes transform the overall feel of the ship. My Sapphire Veranda Suite  I stayed in one of the newer Sapphire Veranda Suites, and honestly, it was beautiful. The suite was incredibly spacious, with a bright, contemporary interior and a huge private balcony.  There was plenty of room to relax, with a comfortable lounge and dining area, a separate dressing area and a walk-in wardrobe providing an impressive amount of storage. It felt like a space where you could genuinely settle in and make yourself at home, rather than simply somewhere to sleep between ports.  There were plenty of thoughtful touches throughout the suite, too. A coffee machine with a selection of pods was provided, while the fridge was stocked with your preferred beverages and replenished daily. On arrival, we also found crystal truffle chocolates and a bottle of champagne waiting for us.  The bathroom was equally impressive, featuring a large his-and-hers marble vanity with plenty of storage and shelving. The shower was a particular highlight, with three different options: a rainfall shower, wall-mounted body sprays and a handheld shower.  The bedroom itself was wonderfully spacious and included a large TV, while the balcony could be accessed from both the bedroom and the living area. With a table and chairs outside, it was the perfect spot to sit with a morning coffee or enjoy breakfast in the sunshine while watching the Mediterranean pass by.  Dining on Crystal Serenity  If there was one aspect of my Crystal Serenity experience that really stood out, it was the food.  The quality of the dining on board was exceptional – easily some of the best I’ve experienced at sea. There’s an impressive variety of restaurants and dining venues, so you’re never short of choice, whether you’re looking for something casual or a more special evening meal.  The dining options include Beefbar, Umi Uma by Nobu, Osteria d’Ovidio, Trident Grill, Marketplace, Waterside, The Bistro, The Vintage Room and Scoops Gelato Bar. There’s also 24-hour in-suite dining, meaning you can enjoy something to eat whenever you fancy it.  We managed to experience all the restaurants apart from The Vintage Room, which is a private dining experience that guests can arrange with the chef and tailor to their preferences.  Umi Uma by Nobu  My favourite dining experience on board had to be Umi Uma. All I can say is wow!  From the impeccable service to the incredible selection of freshly prepared sushi and sashimi, everything about the experience was exceptional. The sushi and sashimi are prepared in an open kitchen within the restaurant, so you can watch the chefs at work, which adds another layer to what already feels like a special dining experience.  The main menu was equally impressive, with an incredible variety of dishes to choose from. It was far more than simply sitting down for dinner – it felt like an experience in itself.  If you’re travelling with Crystal, I would absolutely recommend making a reservation at Umi Uma. It’s one dining experience you won’t want to miss.  Exceptional Service  The service throughout Crystal Serenity was another real highlight of the sailing.  Every server and waiter we encountered was incredibly attentive and always more than happy to help. Whether it was explaining something on the menu, making recommendations or simply ensuring our glasses were topped up before they were even empty, nothing ever felt like too much trouble.  One of the standout service experiences was at Umi Uma, where our waitress was exceptional. She was incredibly personable, made excellent recommendations, had us laughing throughout the meal and was genuinely attentive from start to finish. It completely changed the dynamic of the evening and made the experience particularly memorable.  It’s this kind of service that really demonstrates what Crystal does so well. There’s a sense that the crew genuinely want you to have a wonderful time, rather than simply providing a service.  Entertainment and White Night  We unfortunately didn’t get to experience all the evening entertainment, but we did manage to see a Billy Joel tribute performance, which was fantastic. The music was brilliant and it was a really enjoyable show.  The highlight, though, was undoubtedly White Night. Taking place around the main atrium, White Night brings guests together for an evening of live dancers, singers and entertainment, with everyone encouraged to join in. The atmosphere was fantastic, and it was a great example of how Crystal creates opportunities for guests to come together and enjoy the experience beyond simply dining and relaxing. It was certainly one of the highlights of my sailing.  Exploring the Mediterranean  Our journey began in Málaga, which is a fantastic place to spend some time before a cruise if you have the opportunity. The airport is around 20 minutes away, while the city centre and cruise port are both easily accessible, making it a very convenient starting point.  Our first port of call was Cartagena, where Crystal Serenity docked within walking distance of the town. It’s not the largest destination, but there are plenty of charming streets and little shops to explore, making it an easy and enjoyable port to discover independently.   From Cartagena, we travelled to Alicante, where once again the ship was docked right in the heart of the city. We enjoyed some delicious paella overlooking the port before exploring the shops and surrounding area. Alicante is much more built-up, with a fantastic beach nearby, so it’s a great option if you want to combine sightseeing with some time relaxing by the sea.  We then visited Castellón. On this occasion, we decided not to disembark and instead used the opportunity to enjoy Crystal Serenity and make the most of the facilities on board.  Finally, we arrived in Barcelona, where we disembarked before transferring to the airport for our flight home. The airport was around 20 minutes away, making Barcelona another particularly convenient end point for a Mediterranean cruise.  Overall, it was a fantastic itinerary, combining a lovely selection of Spanish cities with easy-to-access ports and plenty of opportunities to explore both onshore and onboard.  My Overall Impression  Overall, I think Crystal is fantastic. When you consider the combination of value, exceptional service and outstanding food, I genuinely believe the experience is worth every penny.  The service in particular really stood out to me. Everyone we encountered was friendly, attentive and genuinely keen to make sure we were having a great time, while the quality and variety of the food exceeded my expectations.  One thing worth bearing in mind is that Crystal does welcome children on board, and there were a number of families travelling during our sailing. If you’re looking for a particularly adults-focused atmosphere, I would recommend checking whether your chosen itinerary falls during the school holidays, as this is likely to influence the number of children on board.  With the refurbishment of Crystal Serenity also on the horizon, I think the ship has the potential to elevate the experience even further. The service, dining and overall experience are already fantastic, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how the refurbishment enhances what is already a wonderful product.  My Crystal Serenity Tip  If you’re sailing in the Mediterranean during the summer, there’s one little tip I’d definitely recommend. Depending on the direction you’re travelling, try booking Umi Uma at around 7:30pm. You could find yourself enjoying dinner as the sun begins to set over the Mediterranean, creating an incredible backdrop to your meal.  There’s also a door within the restaurant leading out onto a wraparound deck, so you can step outside and take in the views – and capture some fantastic photographs while you’re there. It’s a small detail, but timing your reservation around sunset could make an already memorable dining experience even more special.  Ready to Experience Crystal for Yourself?  My time on board Crystal Serenity gave me a fantastic insight into what makes Crystal such a popular choice for luxury cruising. From the spacious suites and outstanding dining to the genuinely exceptional service, there’s a lot to love – and with the ship’s refurbishment coming later this year, there’s even more to look forward to.  If you’re considering a Crystal cruise and would like to find out more, our luxury Cruise Concierge team is here to help. They can talk you through the ships, suites, itineraries and experiences available, and help find the right sailing for you.  Get in touch with our Cruise Concierge today to start planning your Crystal experience.  Deals for Crystal Cruises ships Crystal Serenity destinations Mediterranean

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn

The Top 4 Destinations to Visit on a Luxury Cruise in the Autumn Autumn is upon us, and as the air grows crisp and the landscapes begin to evolve, there’s no need to halt your travels. In fact, there are plenty of incredible locations you can enjoy across the globe with a luxury cruise, some even more beautiful for visiting them in these colder months. Vicky Chapman reviews some destination highlights to consider as we welcome a new season. Explore Japan Cruises 1. Japan No autumnal destination inspiration would be complete without a mention of Japan. Whilst renowned for its infamous cherry blossom season, the destination is nothing short of breathtaking during the cooler season, boasting an array of foliage, from fiery reds and golden ginkgo to vivid maple leaves across temples, gardens and mountains. The country is home to an endless number of beautiful temples, from Kyoto to Nara and Mount Takao, which glow amongst the seasonal colours. The pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds make it a far more suitable time for sightseeing, hiking and exploring many of Japan’s spectacular cities like Osaka and Tokyo. You can also enjoy the outdoor hot springs whilst surrounded by the colourful scenery in Hakone, Kusatsu or the Japanese Alps. 2. Canada and New England Famed for its vibrant foliage, this beloved area of North America is simply stunning during the Autumn season. With foggy mornings and cooler temperatures, it’s the perfect hiking weather, where you can marvel at the sea of red, orange and golden leaves flooding acres of land. If you’d like to extend your journey pre- or post-cruise, it’s highly recommended to drive one of the region’s iconic routes, like the Kancamagus Highway, Route 100 and Mohawk Trail. Embrace the festive spirit with apple picking, harvest festivals and pumpkin patches. Explore historic sites and discover the many restored 18th and 19th Century buildings. 3. Alaska A destination that is a common highlight of any frequent cruiser, Alaska is an astonishing part of the world, offering unrivalled views of its towering mountain ranges, pristine waters and fascinating wildlife. Aside from the alpine tundra and boreal forests exploding in deep reds, golds and oranges, the autumnal months are also a particularly active time for resident wildlife. Witness bears and moose in their natural habitats and enjoy an unforgettable afternoon of whale-watching, so you can see these incredible creatures up close. Autumn also means clear, darker nights, which offers explorers a prime opportunity to witness the northern lights while they’re cruising. 4. Mediterranean While beautiful, the Mediterranean summer often involves rocketing temperatures and intensive crowds. Sailing along this part of the world during the autumn allows you to enjoy the iconic landmarks and sites in comfortable weather without the business. Enjoy less queueing and more exploring, whether you’re sailing around the west from Barcelona or Lisbon, or around the east from Athens or Rome (Civitavecchia). The autumnal season is also the perfect time for river cruising, where you’ll still enjoy lots of sunlight but a more serene, peaceful voyage. Explore the heartland of Europe, from the Rhine or the Seine in France or meandering through Vienna and Budapest down the Danube. Our experience on board Azamara Quest

Our experience on board Azamara Quest

Our experience on board Azamara Quest What is it like to sail on board Azamara Quest? Discover life on board this incredible ship first-hand from our luxury cruise expert Shirley, who sailed on a stunning itinerary from Nice to Rome. Shirley's experience on board Azamara Quest   I've recently returned from an incredible trip aboard Azamara Cruises' stunning ship, Azamara Quest, and wanted to give you an insight into what she has to offer, as well as share some of my highlights from my Mediterranean sailing. I hadn't sailed with Azamara prior to this trip and it's safe to say this sailing exceeded every expectation I had! Discover all Azamara Quest sailings   Cruising with Azamara   Offering a deluxe experience, Azamara is the perfect choice if you're looking for ultimate indulgence as you explore locations across the globe. During your time on board, you’ll experience fine cuisine and destination delights with plenty of overnight stays in off-the-beaten-path ports of call. Plus, with a guest capacity of just 800, you can expect to visit ports that larger ships can't reach and enjoy attentive service like no other. On Board Azamara Quest   Stepping aboard Azamara Quest, my colleague Elizabeth and I were met by warm, welcoming staff and clean, tasteful décor adorned with plenty of artwork and sculptures. We stayed in an Ocean View Stateroom, which was very well laid out with plenty of wardrobe space, a fabulous vanity area and a mini fridge. Outside of our stateroom, the onboard ambience was very relaxed and friendly. There were always plenty of sun loungers available around the pool and multiple areas to unwind with a cocktail or a coffee. There is a fantastic variety of dining venues to suit the different times of day. On arrival, we enjoyed a lighter lunch with panoramic views of Nice's picturesque port at Windows Café and on two of the evenings, we dined at Discoveries Restaurant, which offered a diverse selection of dishes each day from escargot to lobster to pad thai. My dining highlight has to be Aqualina, a stunning Italian restaurant with outstanding service. The Dover sole is a must-try; it was brought to the table whole, and we watched as the waiter skilfully removed the bones and skin before serving it all with a few sumptuous sides, all ready to eat. Destination Discovery   One thing that stands out about Azamara is that their ships are smaller than many other cruise lines, which allows you to dock in hidden gems and get closer to your destination. In Nice, we were docked within walking distance from all the shops, the beach, restaurants and bars, where we stopped to experience the local cuisine and beverages while looking out at the ocean and the palm tree promenade. We also visited Corsica's beautiful port, which is so colourful and scenic, with something new to admire at every turn. It was here that we went on an excursion up to the mountains to taste some food and wine, which was excellent! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave us some insightful information about Corsica. There is a fascinating contrast between snow-covered mountains and sun-soaked coastline, so you can go skiing, then drive an hour and a half in the other direction and find yourself at the beach! Overall, we had the most fabulous time and wouldn't hesitate to sail with Azamara in the future. If you have any questions about sailing with Azamara Cruises or would like to know more about what offers are available, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We provide personalised service, alongside our first-hand experiences and offers you won't find elsewhere. Simply call our Cruise Concierge today on 0808 163 9421. Spotlight on: Asia

Spotlight on: Asia

Spotlight on: Asia One of the most up-coming luxury cruise destinations, Asia is a perfect combination of cosmopolitan cityscapes, exotic ecosystems and historical highlights. Follow the cherry blossoms of Japan to the temples of Angkor in Cambodia, the vast region is a patchwork of vibrant and tropical landscapes, wonderful local life and truly unforgettable experiences. India Rich in tradition, architecture and history, India needs no introduction. It’s home to some of the most favoured cuisine in the world, varied in its cultural climate, and the perfect place to warm your soul in spirituality. The many elements that make up the greatness of India are ingredients in a smorgasbord of pancake-flat plains and crumbling forts, dusted with spice and washed down with a cooling glass of lassi (a yoghurt drink favoured across the country). Visit Mumbai and experience grand architecture, unique bazaars to barter in and temples to explore. The lively and chaotic streets are a great place to people-watch, while there are still many religious sites, lakes and parks to catch your breath and relax. Alternatively, you could see India on a tour of the Golden Triangle. Usually spread across four- or five-days, the tour combines ancient history with modern life, perfectly introducing three of the region’s top destinations: Jaipur, Delhi and Agra. Enjoy rickshaw rides and visits to iconic landmarks, alongside luxury hotel stays. Bali Bali was voted TripAdvisor Travellers’ Top 10 Choice in 2018 and it’s easy to see why. The region is brimming with exotic wonder and spiritual moments. Lush green paddy fields stretch out from paradise beaches where you can snorkel, surf or simply lie on the sand soaking up the sunshine. It is pristine and peaceful. Tranquillity rests along the remote coast of Candidasa (also known as Segkidu Village) where serene sunsets shine down upon lagoons of blooming water lilies and infinity pools. However, if you can endure the hustle and bustle, it’s well worth a trip to popular Ubud and its busy cultural scene. Here lies one of Bali’s most iconic scenes: the Tegallalang Rice Terraces. Cascading down into the depths of the valley, this innovative irrigation system is the epitome of the regions beautiful scenery and Balinese traditions. Vietnam Another popular region is Vietnam, with a stunning location between Cambodia and the South China Sea. Its home to a plethora of life, from its beaches and mountains to its busy cityscapes. As the country’s capital, Hanoi is a top choice to visit in Vietnam. It’s a city that primes the senses: the blaring horns, the delicious cuisine, the yellow-hued architecture and the delicate scents of spice markets. Meanwhile, in the mountainous north, Sa Pa offers another layer to the dynamics of Vietnam. Perched at the edge of the Hoang Lien Son range, local life dissipates into small villages and magnificent scenery. Watch as the sun sets behind the Fan Si Pan (Vietnam’s highest peak) and breathe in the Vietnamese fusion of old and new – where incense-infused temples feature alongside 21-century skyscrapers. Japan Japan offers a dazzling mix of traditional culture and sci-fi streetscapes. Designer boutiques – check! Utopian mega-malls – check! Centuries-old marketplaces on cobblestone lanes – check! It seems that there is a surprise around every corner in Japan, whether it is reminiscent of the past or hints at the future to come. The capital city, Tokyo, is one of the most populous cities in the world, with more than 13 million residents. The city also tops the list for the most Michelin stars, with over 300 handed out to restaurants across the region. Aside from local life and dining, Japan is also popular for its cherry blossom season – an annual event that is as symbolic as it is beautiful. This worldwide phenomenon offers a stunning display of pink and white that has been celebrated for centuries. Not forgetting another natural wonder, Japan’s Mount Fuji is the country’s largest mountain and an iconic landmark. Rising at 3,775m above sea level it pierces the skyline and can be seen from Tokyo or Yokohama on clear days. Malaysia Supported by the catchy tourist slogan, ‘Malaysia, Truly Asia’, this region is a melting pot of Asian cultures, with no other country hosting Asia’s three major races: Malay, Chinese and Indian. This makes it the perfect place to experience all of Asia in one go – from the dazzling lights of Kuala Lumpur to Malacca’s UNESCO World Heritage city centre. The country is multi-ethnic and multicultural, making it the perfect place to experience all of Asia in one go. More than a cruise: Cherry blossom season in Japan

More than a cruise: Cherry blossom season in Japan

More than a cruise: Cherry blossom season in Japan Japan’s cherry blossom season is a worldwide phenomenon. The stunning display of pink bursts through the cities and towns of Japan has been celebrated across the region for centuries. The season resides in Japan, where it holds a very prestigious place in the country’s culture. There are a number of cruise lines which visit this region during the cherry blossom season, just so you can experience it first-hand. Read on to find out more about what makes this experience truly unforgettable. What is cherry blossom season? Cherry blossom, also known as sakura, is a beautiful flower which blooms from several trees of the genus Prunus, in particular, the Japanese cherry. The flowers have an affinity with Japan as they bloom once per year across many of the regions in a stunning display of pinks, plums and white. The season is named hanami (flower viewing) which represents not only the cherry blossom blooming but also when locals enjoy cherry blossom viewing and are at their most relaxed. Typical hanami spots include city parks, gardens and rivers, where the trees create a beautiful display of petals. Locals also hang lanterns in the trees which lights up the trees during the evenings for a cosy, alternative perspective of cherry blossom viewing. What do they symbolise? In ancient Japan, cherry blossoms would symbolise the rice-planting season and they were used to bless the year’s harvest. The beauty of the flowers also signified the metaphor of life as the Japanese believed that sakura trees contained spirits which made offerings to them with rice wine. This then grew into the tradition of feasting during the season which eventually evolved into the celebration that we see today. When is cherry blossom season? Japanese cherry blossom season differs from region to region, but it typically starts at the end of January to early May. It only lasts one to two weeks in each region due to the delicate nature of the flowers, sometimes less if it’s raining. The season starts earlier in the south, because of the higher altitudes. Japan’s cherry blossom first begins to bloom in Okinawa in January-February, before moving to more central Japan in March-April, then ending with Hokkaido in May. Where can you see the cherry blossoms in Japan? There are endless places to see the cherry blossoms in Japan, no matter where you choose to go. With luxury cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas, Crystal Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises venturing to a number of Japanese cruise ports, here are the best places to view the cherry blossoms on a cruise. Mount Yoshino, Osaka Mount Yoshino is situated in Yoshinoyama, in the Nara Prefecture. This has been Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing spot for years as it is covered in over 30,000 trees. Carpeted in pink and white blossoms, Mount Yoshino offers the perfect place for hanami. The closest cruise port to here is Osaka, which is an hour and a half’s drive from the port. The path is approximately two kilometres long, beginning in Ginkakuji and ending in Nanzenji. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes dotted along the line of the canal, perfect for a pit-stop during your relaxing walk. One of the best places to take it all in is from the top of Goryokak Tower, a 107m tower which has an observation deck.
