Valparaiso

Valparaíso's dramatic topography—45 cerros, or hills, overlooking the ocean—requires the use of winding pathways and wooden ascensores (funiculars) to get up many of the grades. The slopes are covered by candy-color houses—there are almost no apartments in the city—most of which have... Read More

Galápagos Islands Expedition Cruise Guide 2026

Galápagos Islands Expedition Cruise Guide 2026

Galápagos Islands Expedition Cruise Guide for 2026 A remote, breathtaking part of the globe that’s earned UNESCO World Heritage status, the Galápagos Islands are a dream destination with a host of spectacular wildlife and stunning landscapes. The archipelago is best experienced on a Galápagos expedition cruise, and whether you’re an avid nature lover, a passionate photographer, or simply seeking an extraordinary travel experience, it’s a truly unique part of the world that’s a must-visit for any intrepid explorer. So, what’s so special about the Galápagos Islands? Let’s find out more about this beautiful area of the world. Discover Galápagos Islands Expedition Cruises Where are the Galápagos Islands located? The Galápagos Islands are a stunning archipelago of volcanic islands situated in the Eastern Pacific near the equator, approximately 1,000 kilometres west off the coast of Ecuador in South America. The Galápagos province is part of Ecuador and consists of 18 main islands, as well as three smaller islands. What's so special about the Galápagos Islands? The islands are infamously known for being the foundation of which Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution by natural selection, which continues to play a prominent role in modern-day science today. The Galápagos Islands are a proud UNESCO World Heritage site, home to a vast array of spectacular wildlife and biodiversity, including rare species w hich aren’t found anywhere else on Earth.     What wildlife can I see in the Galápagos Islands on an expedition cruise? The Islands are inhabited by a host of spectacular animals, most notably the Galápagos giant tortoises and marine iguanas, as well as flightless cormorants. There are truly endless opportunities for wildlife interactions wherever you are in the Galápagos; you’ll spot various animals and species without even having to look for it. The surrounding waters are teeming with marine life, from manta rays, hammerhead sharks to turtles and sea lions and an abundance of colourful fish. While on land, you can spot an impressive array of avian life here too, including penguins, blue-footed boobies and the iconic Darwin’s finches, the pivotal part of Darwin’s theory. What activities can you experience on an expedition cruise to the Galápagos Islands? An expedition cruise to the Galápagos Islands offers an array of exciting activities to help immerse you in this beautiful place. From wildlife spotting, snorkelling, hiking up volcanoes, walking on lava flows and visiting the Charles Darwin Research Station, there’s an abundance of fun excursions to enjoy whilst exploring the Islands. Read our blog for more inspiration on what you can get up to while on an expedition cruise around the Galápagos Islands. When is the best time to visit the Galápagos Islands on an expedition cruise? There is no 'bad' time to visit the Galápagos Islands. Having such close proximity to the equator means the weather is always warm, allowing you flexibility to choose the months that work for you, as well as your preferences for weather and wildlife. Despite the climate offering year-round seasonality, there are months and seasons that offer higher temperatures. If weather is a higher priority for you, then December through to May offers warmer days and calmer seas for a smoother sailing experience. While June through to November slightly cooler temperatures (but still comfortable and warm), this encourages a chance to see more active marine life. What cruise lines sail to the Galápagos Islands? You can embark on a Galápagos expedition cruise with a number of different cruise lines, catering to different budgets and needs. If you’re seeking an ultra-luxury experience where you can explore whilst immersed in comfort, Silversea offers phenomenal itineraries to the Galápagos Islands. Both HX Expeditions and Celebrity Cruises also offer incredible expedition sailings for those wanting to visit this beautiful place without the price of a luxury proposition. Which island in the Galápagos Islands is the best to visit? All islands across the Galápagos are a sight to be seen. Each one offers something different to the other, varying in wildlife, culture and landscapes. An expedition cruise will take you to a variety of different islands to immerse you in all that the Galápagos Islands have to offer. Santa Cruz Island: Santa Cruz Island is home to the bustling town of Puerto Ayora and the Charles Darwin Research Station, where you can learn about ongoing conservation efforts. Isabela Island: Isabela Island is the largest island in the Galápagos archipelago, known for its diverse wildlife, including giant tortoises, and stunning sites like the Sierra Negra Volcano. Fernandina Island: For those seeking beautiful beaches, untouched landscapes and abundant marine life, Fernadina Island is the perfect place.  San Cristóbal Island: The administrative capital, offering a mix of cultural experiences and natural beauty, including the iconic Kicker Rock. What landscapes can I see in the Galápagos Islands? The Galápagos Islands feature a variety of contrasting, breathtaking landscapes, including volcanic terrain, green highlands, pristine beaches and biodiverse ecosystems brimming with wildlife. The islands showcase towering volcanic peaks and lava fields, made up of dramatic cliffs, craters, calderas and lava tunnels. The beaches are truly extraordinary, characterised by soft white sands and crystal-clear blue waters making it easy to spot all kinds of wildlife. How do you get to the Galápagos Islands? Travelling to the Galapagos Islands is no easy feat, but the experience when you arrive is worth every moment you spent getting there. Situated just off the coast of Ecuador, the only way to visit the Galapagos Islands for your expedition cruise is by flying through the mainland country itself. Due to there being no direct flights from the UK, the easiest way to get there is flying into an American or European city, where you can board a connecting flight that takes you to Ecuador, before taking a domestic flight directly to the Islands. How long does it take to travel to the Galápagos Islands? It takes approximately 24 hours to reach the Galápagos Islands from the UK, due to connecting flights and transfers in different airports. For those embarking on a cruise in the Galápagos, it’s recommended you fly out at least two days prior to your embarkation to allow enough time for arrival and account for potential delays. You may want to break up the journey by landing in Ecuador and spend a few days adjusting before taking the final flight to Islands themselves. Where can I book an expedition cruise to the Galápagos Islands? SixStarCruises are Europe’s leading expedition cruise specialists, offering a vast depth of knowledge and expertise in expedition cruising. Exploring Egypt on a River Cruise: An Expert Review of Uniworld's itinerary

Exploring Egypt on a River Cruise: An Expert Review of Uniworld's itinerary

What's it like to explore Egypt on a river cruise? An expert review of Uniworld's itinerary We’ve just returned from what can only be described as one of our most enchanting travel experiences to date! Uniworld’s "Splendors of Egypt and the Nile" tour is an absolute essential for any avid traveller’s wish list.  Explore Egypt Cruise Offers Our journey commenced in Cairo, where we indulged in luxury at the Four Seasons Cairo at Nile Plaza - an exquisite retreat offering stunning views of the Nile. Our pre-cruise excursions introduced us to the rich tapestry of Egypt’s history. We began with a visit to the Grand Citadel, a formidable fortress that once served as the seat of power during the Islamic period. Then we explored the breathtaking Grand Egyptian Museum, home to more than 5,000 artefacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb. Walking through this museum, which houses the treasures of the boy king who ascended to the throne at just nine years old, was nothing short of magical. Opened to the public on November 1st, we had the unique privilege of being among the first to witness the incredible display showcasing the beautiful gold mask and other artefacts unearthed by Howard Carter in 1922. The tomb's discovery was a monumental moment in Egyptology and has since captivated the imaginations of countless visitors.                                Next, we flew south to join the SS Sphinx, where the organisation was impeccable. As travel agents, we are accustomed to orchestrating our own escapes, but on this trip, being guided effortlessly through all the details was a true luxury. The SS Sphinx truly impressed us, with our accommodations in the Royal Suite feeling fit for royalty. We had the opportunity to explore other cabin types that were also delightfully decorated and extremely comfortable. Be sure to check out our video showcasing the various categories available on our channel.  Dining on board was a real experience, offering an array of dishes inspired by Egyptian flavours, whilst also providing western alternatives like steak and chicken, ensuring everyone’s tastes were satisfied. The chefs surpassed our expectations, attentively catering to guests’ dietary preferences, which epitomised the first-class service we enjoyed throughout the voyage. The crew were amicable and attentive, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.  Now let’s delve into the itinerary - which was simply outstanding! From the beautifully preserved Temple of Dendera to the illuminated Luxor Temple, exclusive only to Uniworld guests at night, every stop offered a glimpse into the ancient world. Standing in the Valley of the Kings while entering Tutankhamun's tomb was one of the trip's highlights. Here, we found ourselves within the very space where Howard Carter excavated the treasures of the young pharaoh - an incredible experience and a thrilling moment.    One of our most cherished moments was taking a hot air balloon ride over Queen Hatshepsut's temple, providing breathtaking views over the Valley of the Kings and the majestic River Nile. Floating in the sky as the sun appeared over the horizon, alongside around 50 other balloons, was a sight we will carry in our hearts forever. Another memorable highlight was afternoon tea at the iconic Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan. This historic hotel, once a favourite of Agatha Christie, served as the inspiration for her famous novel "Death on the Nile." Sitting on the terrace with breathtaking views of the Nile as the sun dipped below the horizon, we reminisced about the hotel’s storied past and the literary genius who had once walked its halls. The passing felucca boats added to the magical ambiance, creating a truly unforgettable experience.  As our journey continued along the Nile, we visited Philae Temple, marvelling at the Aswan High Dam and transiting Esna Lock, each moment etching itself into our memories.                               Our adventure culminated with a return to Cairo and another delightful stay at the Four Seasons. This time, we visited the Pyramids of Saqqara, where we entered a tomb, leading us to the final grand spectacle of the Pyramids of Giza and the impressive Sphinx. The experience of stepping into one of these colossal structures was both exhilarating and humbling, leaving us in awe of the incredible feats accomplished by ancient engineers. Imagining the blood, sweat, and tears involved in such monumental undertakings is overwhelming.  This journey has ranked among the most remarkable experiences we've ever had. Uniworld excelled with outstanding service, superb organisation, a luxurious ship, and, perhaps most importantly, our knowledgeable Egyptologist, Mohamed, who was pivotal in enriching our experience with his insights.  Moreover, we made wonderful friendships with our fellow guests on board, sharing a camaraderie that made the cruise even more special. Assigned to bus number two, we found ourselves among equally enthusiastic travellers, all appreciating the incredible adventure together. We are pleased to now call these fellow adventurers friends for life.                             We want to reassure anyone considering this trip that we felt completely safe and secure throughout the entire journey. Hygiene was paramount, with hotels and the ship utilising mineral water for washing and ice production. None of our group experienced any illnesses or health issues throughout the trip, which was truly fantastic.  We cannot wait to return to Egypt; this adventure was a treasure trove of memories we will hold dear for years to come.  Don’t miss our full video recounting this memorable cruise. We’re also thrilled to announce a hosted departure for 2027, where we will once again visit this extraordinary itinerary alongside some of our subscribers!  If you’re interested in joining The Posh Travel Blog on this phenomenal journey, contact our luxury cruise concierge and ask about The Posh Travel Blog’s hosted Egypt cruise, or connect with them via our social media channels on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube.   Deals for UNIWORLD Boutique River Cruises destinations Egypt & Red Sea

Lions, tigers and bears: Meet India’s charismatic wildlife

Lions, tigers and bears: Meet India’s charismatic wildlife

Lions, tigers and bears: Meet India’s charismatic wildlife From the deep forests of Chhattisgarh to the salt plains of Gujarat, India is an ever-changing landscape. Its wildlife is equally as varied: here is a selection of India’s most remarkable residents and where best to see them. Sloth bear Found across multiple regions, the sloth bear is the most common bear found in India and the state animal of Bihar. With a short-haired muzzle and long curved claws, the sloth bear is equipped with the perfect tools to excavate termites and ants. The bear’s shaggy black coat makes it distinctive from other bear species, and it is easily spotted scaling trees and knocking down honeycombs to enjoy on the ground as a sweet treat. Best place for sightings: Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh. Bengal tiger The Bengal tiger is as majestic as it is magnificent, a righteous emblem of India. Spotted across central-eastern India, this subspecies is the largest of the tiger family. Habitats include grasslands, rainforests, deciduous forests and mangroves, all of which offer shelter whilst hunting or resting. A particular hot-spot is Madhya Pradesh – sprinkled with temples and palaces, this sacred region has a subtropical climate well-suited for these felines. Best place for sightings: Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh. Asiatic lion An incredibly rare and breath-taking sight when visiting India, the Asiatic lion is a little different from its African cousin. Distinguishing features include a short, dark mane with prominent ears, as well as a longitudinal fold of skin of skin running along its stomach. These lions can only be found in and around the Gir Forest of Gurjarat, at the most western tip of India. Here, the lions roam freely across 20,000 sq. km of thick, undisturbed forests and savanna plains. Best place for sightings: Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat. Lion-tailed macaque This striking monkey is the smallest of the macaque species and can be found roaming the Western Ghats mountains of southwest India. With a grand mane of hair around its face and tail like a lion, the monkey inhabits evergreen forests and can be found perched high in the forest canopy. The macaque is an Old World monkey and one to see on your journey through India. Best place for sightings: Silent Valley National Park, Kerala. Indian elephant As one of the planet’s largest mammals, the Indian elephant is a powerful animal in both strength and presence. Inhabiting grasslands and evergreen forests, these animals have smaller, rounder ears than African elephants and are typically brown to dark grey. An iconic creature, and often religiously celebrated across India, the species is protected and can be seen on safari in numerous national parks and sanctuaries. Best place for sightings: Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand. Snow leopard With its nimble build and thick fur, the snow leopard is perfectly suited to India’s Himalayan mountains, boasting some of the highest peaks in the world. The high altitude and rocky terrain requires breath-taking agility, which this big cat boasts in droves. They are extremely rare, and you will be lucky to spot one prowling through the Himalayan valleys. Best place for sightings: Hemis National Park, Ladakh. Common kingfisher Along the Western Ghats of southern India and up to the central lakes, kingfishers can be seen flitting from branch to branch in search for food. The blue plumage and ultramarine feathers of the common kingfisher in particular stand out among the deep greens and murky browns of the subtropical wetlands it inhabits. India plays host to around 12 species of kingfisher, each as bright and colourful as the next. Best place for sightings: Thol Bird Sanctuary, Gujarat. Rather than the yellow brick road, follow India’s Golden Triangle and beyond to see the spectacular wildlife of this south Asian subcontinent. Expedition cruises: Why these once-in-a-lifetime holidays are the new way to explore

Expedition cruises: Why these once-in-a-lifetime holidays are the new way to explore

Expedition cruises: Why these once-in-a-lifetime holidays are the new way to explore Have you always wanted to walk in the footsteps of explorers, treading where Charles Darwin formed his theory of evolution or where Sir Ernest Shackleton conquered an ill-fated voyage with no loss of life? Expedition cruises sound like your dream holiday. Offering once-in-a-lifetime journeys to some of the most remote and captivating destinations on the planet, luxury expeditions with cruise lines like Silversea offer unique experiences you will remember forever. Here are six reasons why expedition cruises are the new way to explore. The wildlife Sailing to destinations including the Arctic, Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands and the South Pacific, expedition voyages come complete with a host of bucket-list wildlife. The animals you may see often can’t be found anywhere else on Earth, especially those found in the Galapagos. This living museum is home to Godzilla (the marine iguana), prehistoric relics like the giant tortoise, and iconic birds like the blue-footed booby and diverse Darwin’s finches. The icy fringes of the Arctic are patrolled by polar bears and dominated by walruses, while as well as your fellow passengers and expert guides, your constant companions of Antarctic expeditions are penguins. In the South Pacific, red-footed boobies and exotic frigatebirds dominate the skies, and beneath the waves, expansive coral reefs boast astounding biodiversity. The cruise ships Expedition cruise ships are no like no luxury vessel you have ever seen. Some are armed with reinforced hulls allowing them to slice through Polar ice with ease, while others have been refurbished with environmentally-friendly features that reduce their impact on your destinations. All expedition ships are small in stature, but this doesn’t mean they scrimp on luxury. The experience on-board expedition cruise ships includes gourmet restaurants, stunning public spaces, and plush staterooms and suites. Your every whim is catered for, and there is no better place to rest your feet after a day fuelled by exploration. The guides Experienced local guides will accompany you on every expedition cruise. Experts in their field; historians, botanists, ornithologists, biologists and more will lead your on-shore explorations and treat you to fascinating lectures on-board your ship in the evening. These professional guides will use their knowledge and experience to offer authentic experiences in your destination of choice. From tracking must-see species to offering photography tips and answering all of your burning questions, their expertise will make you feel like a true explorer. The itineraries Luxury expeditions sail to the most remote corners of the planet, and regardless of where you sail, you itinerary will be based around new, unique experiences that you can’t enjoy on everyday luxury sailings. Trek across frozen Arctic landscapes one day before chasing the Northern Lights by snowmobile the next. Hop into a Zodiac and sail right up to looming glaciers, and go in search of polar bears on expansive sea ice. On Galapagos island expeditions, get up close to giant tortoises on Genovesa Island and dive with marine iguanas as they forage for algae beneath the waves. Experience native life among the tribes in Madang in Papua New Guinea, and see Adelie penguins raising their chicks along the Antarctic Peninsula. Luxury cruise lines like Silversea will even help you craft an expedition that is truly bespoke. The cultures Expedition cruises offer cultural immersion like never before. After all, it isn’t every day you can go fishing with local villagers, take part in traditional ceremonies with ancient tribes, and be guided through your destinations by local experts. You will gain incredible insights you simply can’t pick up from documentaries or guidebooks, and feel your view of the world transform forever. The number of guests Their small size doesn’t just mean expedition cruise ships can reach the most remote ports; they are also intimate vessels offering relaxing experiences accompanied by unrivalled service. With as few as 100 passengers on-board, the guest to staff ratio is often 1:1, meaning you can enjoy personalised service from crew members who will get to know your individual tastes. Small passenger numbers also mean more intimate experiences on-shore, with no crowds disrupting the natural behaviour of the wildlife or impacting the natural landscape. Would you like to indulge your inner Attenborough or follow in the footsteps of the world’s great explorers? Book an expedition cruise and discover the world on some of Silversea’s most stunning luxury cruise ships. Click the button below or call our Cruise Concierge team to plan your perfect exploration.

Six unmissable things to do on a Galapagos expedition cruise

Six unmissable things to do on a Galapagos expedition cruise

The Galapagos national park is a wonder of the natural world. Floating far out in the Pacific Ocean, largely isolated from civilisation, the landscape, plants and animals here are truly unique. It is safe to say the Galapagos is a bucket list destination, with countless things to see and do. So much so, in fact, that we now offer luxury and luxury expedition cruises to the spectacular shores of the Galapagos islands. Travelling to remote regions, immersing yourself in unique cultures and encountering wildlife up close and personal is the true essence behind a luxury expedition cruise. If you aren’t sure where to start when planning your Galapagos sailing, take a look at our six unmissable things to do on a Galapagos luxury expedition cruise. 1. Go in search of wildlife Of course, Galapagos tours wouldn’t be complete without a serious spot of wildlife watching. The skies are alive with seabirds, Darwin’s finches flit between the trees and marine iguanas bask on the rocks. And if that wasn’t all, you could also spot: Giant tortoises Fur seals Galapagos penguins Galapagos sea lions Whale sharks Humpback whales Racer snakes All Galapagos animals are uniquely evolved to thrive in their island habitat, and this isn’t even an exhaustive list. Such biodiversity has to be seen to be believed. 2. Snorkel among pristine habitat Some of the most spectacular Galapagos wildlife lives beneath the waves. A beautiful mish-mash of coral reefs, mangroves and rocky shores play host to some of the islands’ most impressive natural wonders. Huge whale sharks drift serenely through the water as they feed on plankton, countless fish species jostle for position among the coral, and marine iguanas dive for algae. It makes for breath-taking snorkelling: the crystal clear sea like a window into another world. 3. Hike a volcano One of the joys of a Galapagos cruise is the number of trips available once you glide into port. This is sightseeing with a difference – from the top of a volcanic cone! The volcano lies on Caleta Tagus, accessible at the end of a hike through trees bursting with the songs of Darwin’s finches. The view from the top will take your breath away – an awe-inspiring panoramic view over shimmering Darwin Lake and Tagus Cove. 4. Walk on lava flows Punta Espinoza is an otherworldly Galapagos island. The landscape is positively lunar: dominated by volcanoes, lava flows and rocks that seem to move and shift. But it isn’t the rocks: it is the thousands of marine iguanas stretched out on their surface to soak up the heat. The volcanic activity on Punta Espinoza is relatively young, with the last eruption taking place in 2009. Take a walk on the resulting lava flow: the remains of nature’s fury. 5. Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station Charles Darwin is synonymous with the Galapagos national park. After all, his visit here inspired his theory of evolution by natural selection. In turn, Darwin inspired the Charles Darwin Research Station, a centre working to conserve the Galapagos islands and their natural wonders. One of the Station’s main responsibilities is the repopulation of some of the area’s most vulnerable species. From giant tortoises to land iguanas, visitors receive a fascinating insight into Galapagos conservation. 6. Relax on-board your ship Of course, you don’t always have to leave the ship to enjoy Galapagos activities. In an area so blessed by sunshine, it would be rude not to spend some time on-deck, soaking up the sun or taking a dip in the pool. With the majority of passengers disembarking the Silver Galapagos to explore, it is a great opportunity to take advantage of quieter facilities: particularly if you are partial to a spa treatment. Have you always dreamed of visiting the Galapagos? Would you like to find out more about what you can expect from your island trip? Call us on 0207 980 2848, and your personal Cruise Concierge will walk you through your expedition cruise booking from start to finish.

Discover Antarctica’s Big Five

Discover Antarctica’s Big Five

Discover Antarctica’s Big Five Holding the title of the coldest place on Earth (reaching -92 degrees on a clear winter night!), it is a wonder that life continues to thrive in the southern polar regions. Antarctica is home to some of the most iconic animals on the planet, many of which we would love to see swimming, hunting or waddling through the white plains. Embarking on an expedition cruise is one of the best ways to to see some of these fantastic creatures up-close, but which animals should top your list? Forget Africa – here is Antarctica’s very own Big Five. Chinstrap penguin The second most popular species of penguin in the Antarctic region, Chinstrap penguins are named for the black band markings under their head. Typically living on hillside slopes and rocky terrain, colonies can reach up to 100,000 pairs on some islands. They make nests using stones of different sizes, with both parents tending to their young once born, feeding them on a diet of crustaceans. Elephant seal Elephant seals are the largest of their species which live in this southern continent, growing up to six feet in length and weighing up to four tons. While cruising past the ice caps, you may hear these animals before you see them, as the males defend their territory. Found north of the pack-ice zone, these seals breed in dense colonies on the beaches. They are instantly recognisable due to their sheer size and trunk-like snouts – hence the name. Wandering albatross An inspirational sight, the wandering albatross swoops effortlessly through the Antarctic skies. Boasting a wingspan of up to three metres and living up to sixty years of age, seeing these birds glide past your cruise ship is unforgettable. During the late winter months you can witness pairs of life-long partners arriving to breed on flat grasslands, where you can see their beautiful courtship display. This is one of the only times the albatross spends on land, making it a unique sight. Orca Found in pods of up to thirty whales, orca are found throughout the Antarctic region where it is estimated that 160,000 live. Also known as the killer whale, these mammals display excellent hunting behaviours, teaming up to prey on fish, penguins and seals. Gazing into the crisp waters of the Antarctic and catching sight of a dorsal fin will surely muster up a sense of excitement. On Antarctic cruises you are likely to spot pods of orca breaching the water as they scope out food and socialise with their family pod. Emperor penguin The giants of the penguin world, Emperor penguins are the dignified, elder statesman of Antarctica’s birds. From your stateroom balcony or on land, you can see colonies of up to 5,000 adults and chicks huddling together for warmth, shuffling around every so often to take turns on the outer circle. These birds rarely set foot on land, breeding on the frozen sea and catching food in the icy waters. After the female lays a single egg, the male incubates the unhatched chick while the female goes to sea to hunt for months at a time. He produces a large fat reserve to warm the egg and doesn’t eat, losing 45% of his body weight. The magnificence of Antarctica’s menagerie has to be seen to be believed, with an array of animals roaming the breath-taking glaciers and remote reaches. Embark on the luxury cruise of a lifetime and explore this frozen world in complete comfort.

South Africa’s Whale Watching Festival

South Africa’s Whale Watching Festival

Hermanus is a beautiful seaside town that accommodates breath-taking scenery situated on the Southern coast of Western Cape, South Africa. The area was once a small fishing town, however, has slowly become one of South Africa’s most recognised tourist locations.   What is the Hermanus Whale Watching Festival? Around 100,000 locals and tourists attend the Hermanus Whale Watching Festival each year, to witness the migration of Southern Right Whales. The festival is a celebration of this species’ beauty, with talks on how to protect our oceans and the habitat of these creatures as well as events, and more. Why do whales come to Hermanus? Due to being migratory, the Southern Right Whales are known to relocate to Southern Africa during the summer months, to breed and raise their young in the open warmer waters. When is the best time to see whales in Hermanus? The Southern Right Whales migrate to Hermanus from July through to November, therefore, will be visible to tourists during these months, within the day, alongside other species of whales such as the Humpback whale. The species is very inquisitive and will often investigate whale spotting tour boats which are available experiences from Hermanus, therefore allowing a closer look at this beautiful animal. There is also the opportunity to view the Hermanus whales by walking along the promenade which lines the cliffs of Walker Bay, South Africa! What is so special about the Southern Right Whale? Southern Right Whales have distinct features such as lacking a dorsal fin, possessing callosities covering their head, and large black bodies, often with a white stomach. Behaviours often found in this species of whale include tail sailing, where the whale’s tail remains in the same position outside the water for a few minutes at a time, jumping or partially jumping out of the water, and slapping the water surface with its fins or tail. With this in mind, spectators of the annual Whale Watching Festival are often thrilled with the performance the whales naturally produce! The Southern Right Whale is listed as endangered under the endangered species act, as a result of the whaling industry. When taking part in the Whale Watching Hermanus Festival a percentage of the money generated is contributed to valuable facilities and protection of these magnificent creatures by specialist charities. What does the festival entail? It has been said that Hermanus is the best destination to witness marine mammals, such as species of whales and dolphins, worldwide. Therefore, it is no surprise that during this three-day period local restaurants and bars, accommodation, and other establishments are prepared to cater for the thousands of spectators, as well as activities and entertainment being held on land, providing entertainment for all. Between the wonderful displays by the whales in the ocean, and the festivities onshore, this incredible whale-watching festival is certainly not one to miss if dates align with your cruise to Africa!

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica on board Silver Endeavour It's the ultimate cruise of a lifetime - an expedition to Antarctica. Our luxury product executive Jo embarked on an epic expedition to Antarctica and shared her highlights from her trip. Silversea Expeditions   Silversea boasts the largest group of Expedition Ships in the industry and each vessel with its' individual amenities and a history of exploration that dates back to 1995, is a testament to Silversea's success at providing passengers with unforgettable expedition experiences. On board Silver Endeavour   An Expedition Cruise is something I've always dreamed of experiencing and it's safe to say it went beyond all of my expectations! Stepping aboard alongside Specialist Cruise Concierge, Katie, I was immediately in awe of not only Silver Endeavour's beauty but also Silversea's staff who gave us the warmest welcome! The ship is simply stunning with clean fresh décor and beautiful spaces, all built with a purpose. The staff are amazing and what stood out most to us was that they were as excited as us to be there as we departed, spotting whales and taking in the breathtaking scenery. Despite its' smaller size, like the rest of the ships in Silversea's fleet, you'll never be short of ways to entertain yourself on-board Silver Endeavour. When it comes to meal times, take your pick of four delightful dining options including Silversea's signature, The Restaurant, as well as The Grill and Il Terrazzino serving up authentic Italian dishes. If you'd prefer a light bite, the Arts Café is the perfect place to grab something to eat and enjoy a quiet catch up with your fellow passengers. We spent our time on-board staying in Silver Suite, which is a firm favourite amongst Silversea guests, featuring a private veranda boasting stunning ocean views, spacious living and dining areas and a personal butler service that made our voyage feel extra special. No matter which suite you choose to stay in, you can be sure to find everything you need to experience ultimate comfort at sea! Exploring Antarctica   Something that makes a Silversea Expedition so special is the destinations that they allow you to explore. Visiting the Polar Regions is something that not everyone can say they've experienced, so when I was offered the opportunity to sail around Antarctica on-board Silver Endeavour, I felt extremely lucky! Embarking from St George Island, we were so excited for our first landing in Orne Harbour. It was there that we took our first steps onto the Antarctic Peninsula, taking a hike to see colonies of chinstrap penguins and phenomenal views. That same afternoon we headed out on our first zodiac cruise at Whilhelmina Bay, during which we saw dramatic icebergs and humpback whales, which was an unbelievable start to our voyage. The next morning's activity was at Peterman island so we took a short zodiac to shore where the knowledgeable on-board expedition team had designed three trails, one out to see colonies of Gentoo penguins, another up to an amazing view point and finally to see some more colonies of Adelie penguins, which was a real bucket list ticker for us! An Unforgettable Experience   Another highlight of our Antarctic trip was the day we headed out on a kayak excursion. Taking a short zodiac out, we slid into the 2 man kayaks and then we were off to explore the tranquil waters of Paradise Bay and Skintorp Cove. It was phenomenal, the water was so still and calm and we kayaked in our group of 12, led by two guides Tommy and Tyler for around 4km, before stopping still for a moment to take in the calm and quiet, which was simply amazing. To make our already perfect day even better, before we headed back on-board, a zodiac of Silversea staff came out to us with champagne, hot chocolate and cookies, which is just one example of them going above and beyond to make every stage of our voyage incredible. I hope that I've inspired you to book that expedition cruise you've been dreaming of and offered some insights into life on-board an expedition ship.If you have any questions or would like to know more about what offers are available with Silversea, please get in touch with our Cruise Concierge.
