Expedition cruises: Why these once-in-a-lifetime holidays are the new way to explore

Expedition cruises: Why these once-in-a-lifetime holidays are the new way to explore

Expedition cruises: Why these once-in-a-lifetime holidays are the new way to explore Have you always wanted to walk in the footsteps of explorers, treading where Charles Darwin formed his theory of evolution or where Sir Ernest Shackleton conquered an ill-fated voyage with no loss of life? Expedition cruises sound like your dream holiday. Offering once-in-a-lifetime journeys to some of the most remote and captivating destinations on the planet, luxury expeditions with cruise lines like Silversea offer unique experiences you will remember forever. Here are six reasons why expedition cruises are the new way to explore. The wildlife Sailing to destinations including the Arctic, Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands and the South Pacific, expedition voyages come complete with a host of bucket-list wildlife. The animals you may see often can’t be found anywhere else on Earth, especially those found in the Galapagos. This living museum is home to Godzilla (the marine iguana), prehistoric relics like the giant tortoise, and iconic birds like the blue-footed booby and diverse Darwin’s finches. The icy fringes of the Arctic are patrolled by polar bears and dominated by walruses, while as well as your fellow passengers and expert guides, your constant companions of Antarctic expeditions are penguins. In the South Pacific, red-footed boobies and exotic frigatebirds dominate the skies, and beneath the waves, expansive coral reefs boast astounding biodiversity. The cruise ships Expedition cruise ships are no like no luxury vessel you have ever seen. Some are armed with reinforced hulls allowing them to slice through Polar ice with ease, while others have been refurbished with environmentally-friendly features that reduce their impact on your destinations. All expedition ships are small in stature, but this doesn’t mean they scrimp on luxury. The experience on-board expedition cruise ships includes gourmet restaurants, stunning public spaces, and plush staterooms and suites. Your every whim is catered for, and there is no better place to rest your feet after a day fuelled by exploration. The guides Experienced local guides will accompany you on every expedition cruise. Experts in their field; historians, botanists, ornithologists, biologists and more will lead your on-shore explorations and treat you to fascinating lectures on-board your ship in the evening. These professional guides will use their knowledge and experience to offer authentic experiences in your destination of choice. From tracking must-see species to offering photography tips and answering all of your burning questions, their expertise will make you feel like a true explorer. The itineraries Luxury expeditions sail to the most remote corners of the planet, and regardless of where you sail, you itinerary will be based around new, unique experiences that you can’t enjoy on everyday luxury sailings. Trek across frozen Arctic landscapes one day before chasing the Northern Lights by snowmobile the next. Hop into a Zodiac and sail right up to looming glaciers, and go in search of polar bears on expansive sea ice. On Galapagos island expeditions, get up close to giant tortoises on Genovesa Island and dive with marine iguanas as they forage for algae beneath the waves. Experience native life among the tribes in Madang in Papua New Guinea, and see Adelie penguins raising their chicks along the Antarctic Peninsula. Luxury cruise lines like Silversea will even help you craft an expedition that is truly bespoke. The cultures Expedition cruises offer cultural immersion like never before. After all, it isn’t every day you can go fishing with local villagers, take part in traditional ceremonies with ancient tribes, and be guided through your destinations by local experts. You will gain incredible insights you simply can’t pick up from documentaries or guidebooks, and feel your view of the world transform forever. The number of guests Their small size doesn’t just mean expedition cruise ships can reach the most remote ports; they are also intimate vessels offering relaxing experiences accompanied by unrivalled service. With as few as 100 passengers on-board, the guest to staff ratio is often 1:1, meaning you can enjoy personalised service from crew members who will get to know your individual tastes. Small passenger numbers also mean more intimate experiences on-shore, with no crowds disrupting the natural behaviour of the wildlife or impacting the natural landscape. Discover Antarctica’s Big Five

Discover Antarctica’s Big Five

Discover Antarctica’s Big Five Holding the title of the coldest place on Earth (reaching -92 degrees on a clear winter night!), it is a wonder that life continues to thrive in the southern polar regions. Antarctica is home to some of the most iconic animals on the planet, many of which we would love to see swimming, hunting or waddling through the white plains. Embarking on an expedition cruise is one of the best ways to to see some of these fantastic creatures up-close, but which animals should top your list? Forget Africa – here is Antarctica’s very own Big Five. Chinstrap penguin The second most popular species of penguin in the Antarctic region, Chinstrap penguins are named for the black band markings under their head. Typically living on hillside slopes and rocky terrain, colonies can reach up to 100,000 pairs on some islands. They make nests using stones of different sizes, with both parents tending to their young once born, feeding them on a diet of crustaceans. Elephant seal Elephant seals are the largest of their species which live in this southern continent, growing up to six feet in length and weighing up to four tons. While cruising past the ice caps, you may hear these animals before you see them, as the males defend their territory. Found north of the pack-ice zone, these seals breed in dense colonies on the beaches. They are instantly recognisable due to their sheer size and trunk-like snouts – hence the name. Wandering albatross An inspirational sight, the wandering albatross swoops effortlessly through the Antarctic skies. Boasting a wingspan of up to three metres and living up to sixty years of age, seeing these birds glide past your cruise ship is unforgettable. During the late winter months you can witness pairs of life-long partners arriving to breed on flat grasslands, where you can see their beautiful courtship display. This is one of the only times the albatross spends on land, making it a unique sight. Orca Found in pods of up to thirty whales, orca are found throughout the Antarctic region where it is estimated that 160,000 live. Also known as the killer whale, these mammals display excellent hunting behaviours, teaming up to prey on fish, penguins and seals. Gazing into the crisp waters of the Antarctic and catching sight of a dorsal fin will surely muster up a sense of excitement. On Antarctic cruises you are likely to spot pods of orca breaching the water as they scope out food and socialise with their family pod. Emperor penguin The giants of the penguin world, Emperor penguins are the dignified, elder statesman of Antarctica’s birds. From your stateroom balcony or on land, you can see colonies of up to 5,000 adults and chicks huddling together for warmth, shuffling around every so often to take turns on the outer circle. These birds rarely set foot on land, breeding on the frozen sea and catching food in the icy waters. After the female lays a single egg, the male incubates the unhatched chick while the female goes to sea to hunt for months at a time. He produces a large fat reserve to warm the egg and doesn’t eat, losing 45% of his body weight. The magnificence of Antarctica’s menagerie has to be seen to be believed, with an array of animals roaming the breath-taking glaciers and remote reaches. Embark on the luxury cruise of a lifetime and explore this frozen world in complete comfort.

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica

Our expedition cruise to Antarctica on board Silver Endeavour It's the ultimate cruise of a lifetime - an expedition to Antarctica. Our luxury product executive Jo embarked on an epic expedition to Antarctica and shared her highlights from her trip. Silversea Expeditions   Silversea boasts the largest group of Expedition Ships in the industry and each vessel with its' individual amenities and a history of exploration that dates back to 1995, is a testament to Silversea's success at providing passengers with unforgettable expedition experiences. On board Silver Endeavour   An Expedition Cruise is something I've always dreamed of experiencing and it's safe to say it went beyond all of my expectations! Stepping aboard alongside Specialist Cruise Concierge, Katie, I was immediately in awe of not only Silver Endeavour's beauty but also Silversea's staff who gave us the warmest welcome! The ship is simply stunning with clean fresh décor and beautiful spaces, all built with a purpose. The staff are amazing and what stood out most to us was that they were as excited as us to be there as we departed, spotting whales and taking in the breathtaking scenery. Despite its' smaller size, like the rest of the ships in Silversea's fleet, you'll never be short of ways to entertain yourself on-board Silver Endeavour. When it comes to meal times, take your pick of four delightful dining options including Silversea's signature, The Restaurant, as well as The Grill and Il Terrazzino serving up authentic Italian dishes. If you'd prefer a light bite, the Arts Café is the perfect place to grab something to eat and enjoy a quiet catch up with your fellow passengers. We spent our time on-board staying in Silver Suite, which is a firm favourite amongst Silversea guests, featuring a private veranda boasting stunning ocean views, spacious living and dining areas and a personal butler service that made our voyage feel extra special. No matter which suite you choose to stay in, you can be sure to find everything you need to experience ultimate comfort at sea! Exploring Antarctica   Something that makes a Silversea Expedition so special is the destinations that they allow you to explore. Visiting the Polar Regions is something that not everyone can say they've experienced, so when I was offered the opportunity to sail around Antarctica on-board Silver Endeavour, I felt extremely lucky! Embarking from St George Island, we were so excited for our first landing in Orne Harbour. It was there that we took our first steps onto the Antarctic Peninsula, taking a hike to see colonies of chinstrap penguins and phenomenal views. That same afternoon we headed out on our first zodiac cruise at Whilhelmina Bay, during which we saw dramatic icebergs and humpback whales, which was an unbelievable start to our voyage. The next morning's activity was at Peterman island so we took a short zodiac to shore where the knowledgeable on-board expedition team had designed three trails, one out to see colonies of Gentoo penguins, another up to an amazing view point and finally to see some more colonies of Adelie penguins, which was a real bucket list ticker for us! An Unforgettable Experience   Another highlight of our Antarctic trip was the day we headed out on a kayak excursion. Taking a short zodiac out, we slid into the 2 man kayaks and then we were off to explore the tranquil waters of Paradise Bay and Skintorp Cove. It was phenomenal, the water was so still and calm and we kayaked in our group of 12, led by two guides Tommy and Tyler for around 4km, before stopping still for a moment to take in the calm and quiet, which was simply amazing. To make our already perfect day even better, before we headed back on-board, a zodiac of Silversea staff came out to us with champagne, hot chocolate and cookies, which is just one example of them going above and beyond to make every stage of our voyage incredible. I hope that I've inspired you to book that expedition cruise you've been dreaming of and offered some insights into life on-board an expedition ship.If you have any questions or would like to know more about what offers are available with Silversea, please get in touch with our Cruise Concierge. We provide personalised service, alongside our first-hand experiences and offers you won't find elsewhere. Simply call our Cruise Concierge today on 0808 278 3751.
