Dogsledding

On an expedition voyage, dog sledding offers a meaningful connection to this heritage and a memorable way to travel across the terrain.

Led by experienced mushers, you’ll set out along frozen trails or open plains, guided by a team of strong, well-trained huskies. As the sled pulls away, the initial burst of energy quickly settles into a steady, rhythmic glide.

Before setting off, you’ll be shown how the sled works and how to ride safely, so you can relax and take in the surroundings. Along the way, your guide may share insights into the dogs, their training, and how each one plays a role - from the lead dogs directing the team to those providing the strength behind the sled. You may also hear the musher’s calls - commands such as “hike” to set off, “gee” and “haw” to guide direction, and “whoa” to bring the team to a stop.

Dog sledding remains an important means of transport for some Indigenous Arctic communities and is now also shared with travellers as a distinctive winter experience.
