Andean Condors

Andean condors are among the most iconic birds of South America, they are the largest raptor in South America and a symbol of the Andes, appearing on the national coats of arms of several countries.

With wingspans that can exceed three metres, they rely on rising air currents to glide for hours with minimal wing flapping, soaring high above mountain ridges and deep valleys in the Andes with remarkable ease.

As scavengers, Andean Condors play an essential ecological role, maintaining balance in some of the continent’s most remote environments. They utilise their remarkable eyesight to spot mammal carcasses on the ground and marine animals that have been washed ashore, helping to reduce the spread of disease.

They are present throughout the year, with early mornings often offering the best chance of seeing them as they leave their cliffside roosts in search of food. Observing an Andean condor in flight is one of the most striking wildlife moments the continent has to offer.

These magnificent birds have been classified as ‘Vulnerable’ and are now a protected species, with South American conservation programmes focussing on protecting their habitat, as well as encouraging breeding.
